One of the highest priority needs of Winchester District Memorial Hospital is for a Pigg-O-Stat for the
Diagnostic Imaging Department. This device is used to help infants and toddlers remain in a still, upright position during a chest x-ray. This allows for x-rays to be done more quickly, and
provides clearer images, while keeping the child safe and comfortable.
The current device used is very old and made of wood. It is very difficult to clean, is outdated and not
as sturdy as it used to be. A new, modern Pigg-O-Stat will be safer to use for babies, and more reassuring to parents. The new devices are made from plastic, so are easily cleaned for infection
control.
The provincial government does not pay for medical equipment for hospitals - everything from beds to IV poles to ultrasound machines is only available at WDMH thanks to the generosity of our community (thank you!). The annual replacement equipment needs at WDMH require approximately $3 million dollars to purchase - every year. Most medical equipment has a lifespan of about 10-15 years.
