The Community Hub and Warming Centre would like to add a second Washer and Dryer set for visitors who access the Hub.
We estimate this project costing approximately $5000.00 after factoring the cost of a new washer and dryer, and for the electrical and plumbing expenses (quotes are available for reference).
The completion of this project will have a direct and meaningful impact on vulnerable residents of South Dundas, particularly in the Morrisburg area. By expanding and sustaining access to no-cost laundry services, we are addressing a critical yet often overlooked need. Many of the individuals and families who use this service lack access to running water as they may be experiencing homelessness or are precariously housed. They definitely do not have the financial means or transportation to travel to Winchester or Iroquois to access a laundromat. For them, the ability to wash their clothing and bedding locally is not a convenience—it’s a necessity.
Our current single laundry set is being accessed daily, sometimes by up to 3–4 individuals or families, creating challenges in meeting the growing demand. Expanding this service will allow us to better support Hub visitors who are struggling with poverty, housing insecurity, or limited mobility. Access to clean clothing improves physical health, mental well-being, and dignity. It also supports social inclusion and enables individuals to present themselves appropriately for job interviews, medical appointments, or housing meetings. This project is a direct investment in the health, stability, and dignity of our community members.
House of Lazarus is a non-profit organization that works with the community to ensure that people have the basics of life—it’s a vital support system for individuals and families facing hardship in Dundas County and beyond. As a non-profit organization, we work tirelessly to ensure people have access to life’s essentials: food, clothing, household goods, furniture, and—just as critically—advocacy and housing support. We aim to fill service gaps in the region and act as a bridge to resources that are otherwise out of reach for many.
In February 2023, we took a significant step forward by partnering with St. James Anglican Church to establish the Community Hub and Warming Centre in Morrisburg. Located at 22 High Street, this facility is a lifeline for those experiencing housing and food insecurity, especially those unable to travel to access services in Cornwall. Open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Hub offers free meals, programming, laundry and shower facilities, access to partner agencies, furnished bedrooms, and—perhaps most importantly—compassionate human connection. Last year the Hub assisted 38 people who were experiencing homelessness and is now averaging 200 + visits a month.
We strive to be a first-stop community hub that coordinates support and provides resources to those in need.
