Friends of the Sanctuary

Description of your proposed project::

Many of our nature trails need to be improved for safety and handicapped access.

We do have new sections of boardwalk over some marshy areas. These were installed at huge expense through a collaborative effort by the St Lawrence Parks Commission and the volunteers, The Friends Of The Sanctuary. However, the ground trail between them is very rough in areas.

We hope to stake boards in on both sides of the trails in some areas, then fill in between with gravel, and then compact to make a surface that is safer and wheelchair accessible.

What is the estimated cost of this project?: $2000.00

What is the estimated date of completion if this group receives the donation?: Spring and summer 2019

How will completion of this project directly benefit the residents of South Dundas?:

This project will result in increased utilization of the trails. Especially by the handicapped, and also older folks (ie grandparents) who may now be able to bring children along with them.

Walking our  trail system is one of the few remaining free activities available in our area.

This provides a healthy alternative to sitting in front of a screen. It gives a lot of interaction with nature in a safe environment.

What do you know about this organization that you wish everyone knew?: Our members are all volunteers, who share a love and appreciation for nature.

A focus is towards children, and the bulk of our activities are geared towards them. Even in winter, when we rent snowshoes and cross country skis, the cost is only $4 for a child under 16.

Even then, huge numbers of parents, children, photographers, and general nature lovers walk the trails for free.

In the past, we have held a huge Nature and Wildlife Day. This summer we are attempting to split it up and hold small but interesting events spread out throughout the whole season. This will require a lot of hours for our volunteers, so your support will be greatly appreciated. Please consider joining us yourself.
